ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE | A day dedicated to the application of AI in geosciences at the INGV

Great participation and lively discussion at AI – DAY @ INGV, the day dedicated to artificial intelligence

The day dedicated to artificial intelligence, organized by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), was held on July 9, 2025, in the Conference Hall of the headquarters in Rome. Over 383 participants, more than 30 presentations, and numerous Early Career Researchers (ECRs) were featured.

The event, also streamed to encourage remote participation, brought together researchers, technologists, technicians, and administrators from various branches of the Institute, offering an important opportunity to share projects, experiences, and visions on the increasingly strategic role of AI in INGV's activities.

Present at the event, the President of the INGV, Fabio Florindo, that has stressing the importance of promoting a culture of innovation within the Institute and build a shared vision for integrating artificial intelligence into research and operational services.

During the day, numerous case studies were presented, demonstrating the use of AI and machine learning in geosciences across all sections of the institute, touching on a wide range of topics, including monitoring, space, ocean, sea, and the environment. AI was also given space in computational volcanology, in seismology and in scientific publication, with the example of the use of AI Generative (e.g. ChatGPT) for metadata creation and management.

Numerous interventions and posters They demonstrated the variety of projects underway in various sections of the INGV. The discussions with external experts, who illustrated the strategies adopted by national institutions such as the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the National Research Center for High-Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing (ICSC), aroused great interest.), from the Italian supercomputing centre CINECA and from international organisations such as the Joint Research Centre (JRC).

In the afternoon, attention shifted to future prospects, with a Plenary session dedicated to the presentation of a structured initiative on AI within the INGVThe debate highlighted the shared desire to consolidate existing skills and promote synergy between different disciplines, so that AI becomes a cross-cutting driver of scientific, technological, organizational, and administrative efficiency development.

The event represented a crossroads of experiences and professionalism united by the desire to enhance the effectiveness of scientific research and monitoring systems through Artificial Intelligence in all its forms.
