It has been installed in Mamone (NU), in the heart of Sardinia, a new magnetic and magnetotelluric station for the study of the natural electromagnetic field and the deep geophysical characterization of the territory.

The station is located within the area of the Onanì-Mamone prison, in a environmental context particularly favorable to geophysical observations: the site is in fact characterised by an extremely low level of anthropogenic noise, an essential condition for the quality of long-term magnetic and magnetotelluric measurements.

The installation was possible thanks to the collaboration of the Management of the Onanì-Mamone Prison and Sardinia Regional Directorate of the State Property Agency, who accepted the proposal to host the station, recognizing the cultural and scientific value of the project.

This is a strategic opportunity not only for the scientific community, but also for the Sardinian and Barbagia regions in particular, to which the Mamone Directorate will provide active and unconditional support, making key assets available., declared the director of the penal institute, Dr. Vincenzo Lamonaca.

The activity, in fact, involves the involvement of the guests of the Prison To consolidate the station's installation once the tests to verify the correct functioning of the sensors have been completed. The initiative also represents an opportunity for active participation in an international research project, demonstrating how contexts not traditionally associated with scientific research can become an integral part of knowledge production.

From a scientific point of view, the new installation will contribute significantly to the research activities carried out within the project. MEET (Monitoring Earth's Evolution and Tectonics) ofNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) aimed at developing infrastructure for the study of the processes that control the Earth's evolution and its internal dynamics, with particular attention to the Italian territory and the areas most exposed to natural hazardsThe magnetometer station will be an integral part of theFABER Multiparametric Observatory whose objective is to acquire long time series of geophysical data, including those on the geomagnetic field, under optimal environmental conditions.

The new station also represents an important step forward in the characterisation activities of the site candidate to host Einstein Telescope (ET), Europe's future third-generation gravitational wave detector. Specifically, this station will contribute to electromagnetic monitoring and understanding the area's geophysical properties, including for the purpose of assessing the environmental conditions of the territory proposed for hosting the research infrastructure.

The Mamone station is thus a candidate to become a reference point for electromagnetic monitoring of Sardinia and a key element in the scientific path that accompanies, even in the social sphere, the construction of the Einstein Telescope on the territory.
