Since 2009, the event, named after the father of contemporary volcanology, has been the most important opportunity for scientific discussion for the entire Italian volcanological community. The leading experts in the sector will meet to discuss recent developments in research and monitoring activities in the field of volcanology.

In the setting of the Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena in Catania, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) with the Italian Association of Volcanology (AIV), the University of Catania and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI), organize from 29 September to 1 October 2022 the fifth edition of the Alfred Rittmann Conference.
The 2022 edition is divided into 16 oral and poster sessions, selected on the basis of a call for sessions solicited from the volcanological community belonging to Universities, Research Institutions, Public Land Management Institutions and Civil Protection structures. The program provides for the coverage of multiple scientific topics in the volcanological field and favors a highly multidisciplinary approach to discussion, also including aspects relating to the communication and dissemination of volcanological culture in our country.

A Plenary lecture, held by Prof. Roberto Sulpizio, of the University of Bari, will concern the recent awakenings of some volcanoes on a global scale, which have sometimes had significant impacts on society. Furthermore, a space will be set up dedicated to the viewing of multimedia contents through virtual reality and augmented reality.

The program will end on 2 October with a post-conference excursion to the summit area of Etna, led by the Director of INGV-OE, Stefano Branca, and by the President of AIV, Prof. Marco Viccaro.
