21 years after the publication of the original English version, the Italian version of the European macroseismic scale EMS-98 has been published, the translation of which was edited by Andrea Tertulliani and Raffaele Azzaro, researchers at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV ), and by Giacomo Buffarini of the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA).
The EMS-98 scale has progressively replaced the traditional MCS scales (Mercalli-Cancani-Sieberg macroseismic scale) and MSK (Medvedev-Sponheuer-Karnik scale) in the practice of macroseismic surveys which are carried out during significant earthquakes not only in Europe but also in many non-European countries.
Despite some diffusion difficulties encountered in the very first years following its officialization linked to the new procedures it imposed, the EMS-98 scale is now a point of reference also for non-seismologists: proof of this is its inclusion in the legislation regulating the earthquake bonus, the tax deduction for anti-seismic adjustment works.
The printing of the Italian version of the EMS-98 was financed by INGV, the Center Européen de Géodynamique et de Séismologie (ECGS) and the Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ).
