The extraordinary events to tell the story of the Institute's research on Planet Earth and its activities, which have always been at the service of society, continue in the historic headquarters on the slopes of Vesuvius.
After the inaugural event hosted last October 7th at the Sala Koch of the Senate of the Republic and the institutional day of October 8th at the Etna Observatory in Catania, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) continues the celebrations of the twenty-fifth anniversary of its institution with a double event aimed at institutions and citizens.
On Saturday 26 October, starting at 10:00, the celebrations will arrive in Ercolano (NA) for the institutional day "From the Vesuvius Observatory to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology".
The greetings of the President of the INGV Carlo Doglioni will be followed by speeches by Mauro A. Di Vito, Director of the Vesuvius Observatory of the INGV, Francesca Bianco, Director of the Volcanoes Department of the INGV, Michele Di Bari, Prefect of Naples, Fabio Ciciliano, Head of the Civil Protection Department, Vincenzo De Luca, President of the Campania Region, Gaetano Manfredi, Mayor of the Metropolitan City of Naples, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, and Raffaele De Luca, President of the Vesuvius National Park Authority.
The institutional day, hosted - by invitation - in the historic headquarters of the Vesuvius Observatory, will be an opportunity to remember the long regulatory process that, twenty-five years ago, allowed five distinct Research Institutes of our country to unite under the common aegis of the nascent INGV, becoming a world reference point in scientific research on the study of Planet Earth.
The event aims to retrace, between continuity and innovation, the progress made by INGV in the field of seismic, volcanic and environmental research and monitoring, with particular attention to Neapolitan volcanoes and the prevention of natural risks.
During the day, two monographs published by the INGV will be presented: “Twenty-five years of activity”, a collection of unpublished and high-impact images to retrace the first quarter of a century of the Institute, and “Vesuvius in eruption in the paintings of the Vesuvius Observatory”, a commented collection of gouaches of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century eruptions from the collection owned by the Institute.
The visit to the permanent exhibition on the history of volcanology and surveillance of active volcanoes hosted by the Museum of the Royal Vesuvius Observatory will conclude the day together with the special postmark curated by Poste Italiane on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the INGV.
The live streaming of the event will be broadcast on INGVeventi YouTube channel.

The celebrations will continue on Sunday 27 October with an extraordinary opening of the historic site of Ercolano for the general public.
The morning will lead visitors to discover the oldest volcanological observatory in the world: interactive exhibits, videos, information panels and scientific instruments of the time will tell the story of scientific research and surveillance of Neapolitan volcanoes, offering an engaging experience between science, art, history and culture.
Guided tours will depart at 9:30, 11:00 and 12:30 and will be conducted by reservation, in groups of maximum 50 visitors.
