From the 26 30 May the international community of Einstein Telescope (ET) will meet at Bologna, at the CNR-Territorial Research Area, for its Fifteenth Annual Symposium, an event that will see the presence of over 300 researchers from all over the world. The event, co-organized by Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” of the University of BolognaBologna Section of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN),  Bologna Section of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) e National Institute of Astrophysics - Observatory of Astrophysics and Space Science of Bologna (INAF-OAS), represents an important opportunity to discuss the developments of this ambitious project, which aims to become the most advanced gravitational wave observatory in the world.

Einstein Telescope is the future third-generation European research infrastructure dedicated to gravitational wave detectors, designed to exceed by at least a thousand times the capabilities of current instruments (LIGO in the United States and Virgo in Italy, which in 2015 detected for the first time the gravitational waves predicted by Albert Einstein). One of the sites nominated to host ET it is located in Sardinia, in the area around the former mine of Sos Enattos (NU).  The experiment will be built inside a large underground structure, 100-300 meters deep. This "silent" location will isolate it from seismic and human vibrations ("noise") that could interfere with its delicate measurements.

In parallel with the intense scientific programme, a series of events will also take place in Bologna during the week. free initiatives aimed at citizens, organized within the ET-Italia project with the support of the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO).

"Einstein Telescope: A Look into the Deep Universe" Exhibition

From May 26th to June 13th | Palazzo d'Accursio (Manica Lunga), Piazza Maggiore, Bologna

Monday to Saturday from 7:00 to 20:00; Sunday from 9:00 to 19:00

The exhibition itinerary starts from Einstein's general relativity up to the revolutionary discovery of gravitational waves, and then focuses on Einstein Telescope (ET), a cutting-edge research infrastructure included in the ESFRI Roadmap. The exhibition explores the scientific prospects of ET and the technological and industrial challenges of the project, with a focus on the Italian candidacy of the Sos Enattos site in Sardinia, where preparatory activities are already underway.

Show "The Universe Underground - Einstein Telescope in Sardinia"

Thursday, May 29 | 21:00 p.m. | Cinema Modernissimo, Piazza Re Enzo 3, Bologna

Speakers: Marica Branchesi (scientist, Gran Sasso Science Institute), Massimo Carpinelli (scientist, director of EGO), Anna Tifu (musician), Angelo Adamo (science communicator and artist, INAF). Moderator: Patrizio Roversi

Free admission. Reservations: https://l.infn.it/et-modernissimo

Conference-show that intertwines science, art and territory to tell one of the most fascinating challenges of contemporary physics: the construction of the Einstein Telescope, the future European underground observatory for gravitational waves, whose ideal site could be in the heart of Sardinia, in the area around the former Sos Enattos mine, in Lula.

Under the ironic and passionate guidance of Patrizio Roversi, the public will be taken on a journey through the depths of the Earth and those of space-time. With the contribution of the scientist Marica Branchesi, among the most famous faces of gravitational wave astrophysics, and of the physicist Max Carpinelli, among the promoters of the project in Sardinia, we will explore the meaning of a research that has the ambition to observe the universe beyond light, listening to its most remote vibrations.

But it won't be just science. The notes of the violin of Anna Tifu, an internationally renowned Sardinian musician, and the live illustrations of Angel Adam, artist and scientist, who will give visual form to the imagery of a universe that pulsates beneath our feet.

Interactive Van "Big Bang Machine"

Thursday 29 May from 12:00 to 21:00 and Friday 30 May from 10:00 to 19:00 | Piazza Galvani, Bologna

The “Big Bang Machine”, a mobile laboratory in the heart of Bologna, offers an immersive experience that guides the public on a virtual journey through space and time, to the origins of the universe. On board a space-time ship, visitors will explore extreme phenomena such as black holes, stellar mergers and the first moments of the cosmos. The experience aims to show the connection between cosmic signals and the study of the Earth, making the themes of fundamental physics accessible in an engaging and interactive way.
