In a book and an exhibition, the students of the Liceo Artistico Caravillani in Rome and the researchers of INGV together to defend the planet
The presentation of the volume edited by scientists Daniele Melini and Spina Cianetti for Pacini Editore and INGV Editore will be held on Saturday 26 February, starting at 11:00, at the Villino Corsini - Villa Pamphilj Library.
The climate emergency told to the young generations by 25 students of an art school in Rome, accompanied by two scientists from INGV: here is “ClimArt - images of change”, the project carried out by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the "Alessandro Caravillani" Artistic High School in Rome to transmit and communicate, through the universal language of art, scientific evidence on the state of health of our planet and to awaken in consciences the awareness that it is no longer possible to postpone common actions to protect the environment.
It is a cry of alarm and anguish, but also a message of hope for the future.
At the presentation, which will be opened by the President of INGV prof. Carlo Doglioni, will be present together with the protagonists prof. Carlo Eufemi, Headmaster of the Caravillani High School, Dr. Leonardo Sagnotti, Director of the INGV Environment Department and expert on climate change, and Prof. Manuela Policicchio, representing the team of teachers who followed the project.
Edited by Daniel Melini e Spina Cianetti, INGV researchers, the volume published by Pacini Publisher and the INGV Publisher, addresses through thoughts and graphics created by Caravillani students some crucial issues related to the climate emergency: the greenhouse effect, global warming, rising seas, sustainable development and threats to ecosystems.
The initial chapter, relating to the 'vital signs of the planet', represents an introduction of a scientific-popular nature with which the researchers Melini and Cianetti, recounting the progress of science in the study of the Earth and its 'state of health', clarify phenomena and imbalances that for several decades now have called for the responsibility to implement concrete actions and behaviors to save it.
“ClimArt – explains the President of INGV Carlo Doglioni in the preface to the book - it takes us to a dimension in which the current knowledge of climate change caused by the increase in greenhouse gases develops new concepts within us, forms of expression that translate these emotions produced by an impending reality”. “Never like today - goes on - the man finds himself facing a problem that he himself has unknowingly generated, at least until a few decades ago. The level of CO2 of 415 parts per million in the atmosphere is such that no human being living today will ever see this value fall below the threshold of 400 parts per million, even if today we suddenly stopped emitting this gas: in fact, the times of nature are centuries old to digest this chemical alteration of the air and reabsorb this molecule in the oceans, sediments and plants. We have the task of finding new forms of energy, possibly that do not create other problems, resources that do not produce unnatural chemical-physical gradients. Geosciences can contribute enormously to this challenge”.
“Now we must act – concludes the INGV President – e this book has the delicacy of art in conveying the message that we must work together for the common good, starting to communicate to all age groups, starting with the youngest. Scientists, painters, poets, public administrators: we must stand together, like ants, to defend our world. Thanks to the authors of this beautiful book that gracefully conveys a loud and clear message: let's defend the environment, the climate and man".
The proceeds from the book, on sale in bookstores, will be used by the "Alessandro Caravillani" art school to finance other projects.
The pictorial and graphic works collected in the volume will be exhibited in the Villino Corsini Library - Villa Pamphilj from Saturday 26 February to Sunday 6 March 2022; it will be possible to visit the exhibition during the opening hours of the library.
Barring adverse weather conditions, the event will take place outdoors in the space in front of the library.

CLIMART | Images of change
The students of the Caravillani Art School in Rome and the researchers of the INGV together to defend the planet with a book and art exhibition
The presentation of the book “ClimArt – Images of change (Images of change)” written by the scientists Daniele Melini and Spina Cianetti for Pacini Editore and INGV Editore will be held at the Villino Corsini Library - Villa Pamphilj (Rome) on Saturday 26 February, at 11:00.
The climate emergency inspired 25 students from the “Alessandro Caravillani” Art School in Rome accompanied by two scientists from the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) to carry out “ClimArt – Immagini del cambia (Images of change)”. This project aims to transmit and communicate, through the universal language of art, scientific evidence on the state of health of our planet and to raise awareness that it is no longer possible to postpone common actions to safeguard the environment.
It is a message of alarm and distress, but also of hope for the future.
The book presentation, opened by the President of the INGV prof. Carlo Doglioni, will host prof. Carlo Eufemi, Headmaster of the Caravillani High School, dr. Leonardo Sagnotti, Director of the INGV Environment Department and expert in climate change, and Prof. Manuela Policicchio, representing the team of teachers who followed the project.
Edited by Daniel Melini and Spina Cianetti, researchers at INGV, the book published by Pacini Publisher and INGV Publisher, collects thoughts and graphic works created by the students of Caravillani, dealing with crucial issues connected to the climate emergency: greenhouse effect, global warming, sea levels rise, sustainable development and threats to ecosystems.
In the first chapter, the researchers Melini and Cianetti describe the 'vital signs of the planet', showing the scientific advances in the study of the Earth and of its 'state of health'. They focus on the warning signs that for several decades have called for the responsibility to take concrete actions and behaviors to save the Earth.
“ClimArt - explains INGV President Carlo Doglioni in the preface to the book - takes us to a dimension in which the current knowledge of climate change caused by the increase in greenhouse gases develops within us new concepts, expressive forms that translate these emotions produced by an impending reality”. “Never like today - he continues - man has to face a problem created unconsciously by himself, at least until a few decades ago. The co2 level of 415 parts per million in the atmosphere is so high that, even stopping suddenly further emissions, no living human being today will ever see this value drop below the 400 parts per million threshold in his life. Indeed, the time required by planet Earth to 'digest' this chemical alteration of the air and reabsorb this molecule in the oceans, sediments and plants is of the order of several centuries. We have the task of finding new forms of energy that possibly do not create other problems, resources that do not produce unnatural chemical-physical gradients. Geosciences can contribute enormously to this challenge”.
“Now we must act - concludes the INGV President - and this book has the delicacy of art in conveying the message that we must work together for the common good, beginning to communicate to all age groups, starting with the youngest. Scientists, painters, poets, public administrators: we must join forces, like ants, to defend our world. Thanks to the authors of this beautiful book that gracefully conveys a strong and clear message: let's defend the environment, the climate and the human race”.
The proceeds from the book, on sale in bookstores, will be used by the “Alessandro Caravillani” Art School to fund other projects.
The pictorial and graphic works collected in the volume will be exhibited in the Villino Corsini Library - Villa Pamphilj from Saturday 26 February to Sunday 6 March 2022; it will be possible to visit the exhibition during the opening hours of the library.
