Paolo Papale, Research Director of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), was appointed Honorary Member (Fellow) of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG).
Founded in 1919, the IUGG is the world's leading international confederation that brings together eight major scientific societies operating in the geophysical field under a single umbrella.
The award was given to Paolo Papale "for innovative and high-level research in the field of geochemical modelling, volcanology and assessment of volcanic risks, which are accompanied by important social implications".
Graduated in Geological Sciences at the University of Pisa, Paolo Papale has led numerous national and European Community projects in the fields of volcanology and volcanic hazards. He directed the Volcanoes Department of INGV, was President of the Division and member of the Scientific Council of the European Geosciences Union, and is a member of the Directive Council and Vice-President of the Academia Europaea in which he holds the role of Chair of the Science Class Exactly.
The presentation of the Fellowship will be held in Berlin on 19 July 2023 during the Closing Ceremony of the XNUMXth IUGG General Assembly.
