Workshops, seminars and interactive games to raise awareness in the coastal communities of the Ebro River Delta, in Catalonia, on the risks associated with sea level rise

After the appointments in Venice, Metaponto and Chalastra (Greece), SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 will arrive in Spain tomorrow, Thursday 5 May 2022, in the Ebro River Delta region, in Catalonia, for the last appointment of the scientific dissemination campaign 'KnowRiskFlood'.
The meeting, aimed at schools and stakeholder premises, is coordinated byNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), from Telecommunications Technology Center of Catalonia (CTTC) and ISOTECH of Cyprus, project partner, with the aim of increasing awareness of coastal communities on the phenomenon of sea level rise and its consequences, including socio-economic ones, exploring needs and possible methods of intervention for risk mitigation and adaptation .
Researchers from INGV and CTCC will involve students from the local school of El Perello in seminars and interactive games to stimulate discussions and reflections on sea level rise. The proposed activities will be aimed at making known the future aspect of the Ebro Delta and at understanding how to protect this natural environment.
The meeting with the stakeholder it will aim to transfer to them scientific knowledge on the causes and effects of sea level rise, but also to raise awareness of the phenomenon in coastal communities. The ISOTECH researchers, addressing in particular the decision maker, will apply a participatory decision support method, based on the study of risk perception by the population residing in coastal areas.
The Ebro River Delta Park, in the province of Tarragona, is a natural area included in the 1971 Ramsar Convention, which includes wetlands of international significance. Its mouth is currently protected by small river islands and is a stopping point for hundreds of species of migratory birds. The Ebro Delta was chosen as a case study of the SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 project as, due to its low elevation, it is highly exposed to the effects of sea level rise, coastal erosion, storm surges and other events extremes. Notably, the latest extreme event to hit the Delta was Storm Gloria in 2020 which caused fatalities, destroyed beaches, and severely damaged crops, sewage and drainage systems.
Like many other deltas in the world, the Ebro delta is also affected by the phenomenon of subsidence due to natural and anthropic causes, which here causes an acceleration of the sea level rise, favoring flooding. Furthermore, the presence of dams along the river has reduced the supply and deposition of sediments, causing the coast to recede.
