Will take place Friday February 20, starting 20 pm: 30, the final event of Presentation of the results of the MT-PROMUD project (definition of a PROMultidisciplinary monitoring project for mud volcanoesMUD) of theNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).

The project, funded under Dynamic Planet 2023-2025, studied the activity of the mud volcanoes with the aim of defining a multidisciplinary monitoring protocol and creating a model of the spatio-temporal evolution of their activity aimed at identifying transitions from an ordinary state to a possible paroxysmal eruption, through the identification of precursors.

Mud volcanoes are geological structures generated by the rise of cold fluids (clasts, gases - especially methane and CO2 - hydrocarbons and highly salinity water) expelled due to overpressure, sometimes in paroxysmal fashion, which constitute a serious source of environmental risk. Very often their ordinary activity gives rise to emission fields very suggestive with cone-shaped structures, griffins and springs that generate fascinating lunar landscapes as well as constituting important open-air natural laboratories for scientific research and risk assessment activities.

PROMUD It is a project of a highly multidisciplinary nature and has seen the collaboration, in addition to researchers from numerous INGV Sections, also from Universities of Milan Bicocca, Bologna, Siena, Salerno, and Palermo.

The three-year monitoring of PROMUD, focused on the study areas of Nirano sauces in the Modena area and Maccalube of Aragon in the province of Agrigento, has allowed us to record extraordinary events such as the variations in the activity of mud volcanoes during earthquakes, which is one of the most debated issues in this field, and the occurrence of a paroxysm that provided the world's first multiparametric instrumental documentation for this type of event.

The results presentation event, organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Fiorano Modenese (MO) with a focus on Nirano Sauces, will take place at the Casa Corsini Cultural Center in Fiorano Modenese and it will be open to public.
