Il 5 novembre è il giorno scelto dall’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite come Giornata Mondiale della Consapevolezza sugli Tsunami ().
L’Assemblea Generale ha invitato tutti gli Stati membri, il sistema delle Nazioni Unite, le organizzazioni internazionali e regionali e la società civile a osservare il WTAD ogni anno e ad aumentare la consapevolezza del rischio posto dagli tsunami.
Per celebrare la Giornata, i ricercatori del Centro Allerta Tsunami dell’INGV (CAT-INGV) realizzeranno varie attività multidisciplinari:
- un’esercitazione promossa dal per mostrare le potenzialità dell’High-Performance Computing applicato alla previsione probabilistica della pericolosità da tsunami. In particolare, si testerà l’Urgent Computing, strumento indispensabile alla valutazione rapida post evento (Rapid Post Event Assessment).
- la “In viaggio tra i maremoti del Mar Mediterraneo. Dal 365 d.C. ad oggi: un percorso interattivo per raccontare i maremoti accaduti nel Mar Mediterraneo”. Attraverso foto, video, testi e link interattivi, si ripercorrono gli tsunami storici e quelli più recenti avvenuti nel Mar Mediterraneo.
- un impegnato dallo scorso anno per il riconoscimento di comunità “Tsunami Ready”, un programma dell’UNESCO volto ad incentivare la preparazione al rischio maremoto.
- un’esercitazione organizzata dalla Protezione civile di Malta in collaborazione con il Joint Research Center (JRC) dell’Unione Europea. Il CAT provvederà all’invio della messaggistica di allertamento per un evento sismico tsunamigenico, prendendo come riferimento lo scenario dell’esercitazione NEAMWave21 (un terremoto di magnitudo 7.9 nel Mar Ionio).
Le attività coinvolgeranno molti Paesi dell’area mediterranea, gli Tsunami Service Provider dell’ICG/NEAMTWS attivi nel Mediterraneo orientale: Grecia, Italia, Turchia e le autorità di Protezione civile, compreso il Dipartimento nazionale italiano che ha contribuito allo sviluppo del Centro Allerta Tsunami dell’INGV.

The World Tsunami Awareness Day
Six years ago, the United Nations General Assembly designated 5 November as .
The General Assembly invited all Member States, the United Nations system, international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, to observe WTAD each year and raise awareness of the risk posed by tsunamis.
To celebrate the Day, the INGV Tsunami Alert Center (CAT-INGV) researchers will carry out various multidisciplinary activities:
- an exercise promoted by the project to show the potential of High-Performance Computing applied to probabilistic hazard forecasts - in this specific case to the tsunami hazard - and in particular to Urgent Computing, essential to the Rapid Post Event Assessment.
- The : "A journey through the tsunamis of the Mediterranean Sea. From 365 A.D. to today: an interactive path to tell the tsunamis occurred in the Mediterranean Sea". Through photos, videos, texts and interactive links, you can discover the historical and more recent tsunamis occurred in the Mediterranean Sea.
- A , involved since last year in applying to become a "Tsunami Ready" community, a UNESCO program to promote tsunami risk preparedness, will be published.
- The CAT-INGV will also participate in the exercise organized by the Malta Civil Protection in collaboration with the European Union's Joint Research Center (JRC). The CAT will provide the alert messaging for a tsunamigenic seismic event, taking as reference the scenario of the exercise NEAMWave21 (an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 in the Ionian Sea).
The activities will involve many countries of the Mediterranean area, the Tsunami Service Providers of the ICG/NEAMTWS active in the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Italy, Turkey), and the Civil Protection authorities, including the Italian National Department that has contributed in recent years to the development of the Tsunami Warning Center of INGV.
